Weekend of Tribal Nominations

I’m not surprised, just a little scared. It scares me that comrades have opted to jump from a fire into a frying pan. This election could also entirely just be a waste of time; it’s simply a path to maintenance of status quo.

The endorsements that took place over the weekend are laughable at their best, and at worst unfortunate. It raises the questions as to whether we shall achieve the change that we desire or even get leaders that can lead us into the land of Canaan- the land full of milk and honey, where comrades shall not be suspended for staging a peaceful demonstration because of blackouts and ensure the level of cleanliness is uplifted.

When comrades from the Luhya community and the Luo nation held their nominations yesterday separately and independently, this left a lot to desire. What is the relevance of the Luhya community, the Luo nation, the Kambas or the Kikuyus in MUSO leadership? Isn’t it a strategy of imposing incompetent and clueless leaders unto comrades?

Interestingly, all tribes are getting ready for the battle; a fierce war of tribal hooliganism at the expense of ideas. We must be ready for a rude shock- a mistake we now pioneer- since we are not ready for the change.

This election, from its onset, is a waste of time.

What criteria was used in the tribal nominations, if the current rumors are anything to go by, was used to eliminate Bwire and endorse Munyasia, or, for the Luo community endorsement of Don Owino at the expense of JJ K’Awino?

Will Munyasia or Don, supposing any of them wins, serve the interest of all Moi university students or the Luhya and Luo community respectively?

If I were all the comrades, I would have not only rejected these tribal leaders but also de-campaigned them. It would be difficult for any of them, having accepted tribal nominations, to get elected by comrades.

All the tribal chiefs should be put on the know, that the interest of the comrades supersedes individualistic tribal interests. They should be informed the MUSO is not a tribal organization where anyone buys and sells aspirants.

MUSO is a union for all of us. We are all entitled to benefit from the union- whether we are from the minority tribe like the Ogiek or the majority like the Kisiis. We are all equal before man and God- none of us is a child of a lesser God.

It is unfortunate how, at this level, we are limiting the democratic space and patriotism. It is opposed to the will of the community on us and a betrayal to our level of education. This act demeans our integrity and belittles our sense of responsibility. It puts us in bad image by showing that we have not broken the bonds of ethnicity and are still enslaved in the yokes of tribalism. I condemn, in soft but straight terms, any forms of tribal nominations!
